Is Technology Using Us?
Studies from many different sources show that the issue of overusing technology is plaguing the youth in America. In Tara Parker-Pope’s writing “The Ugly Toll of Technology” regarding the overuse of technology, she speaks about how technology has caused humans to be impatient and forgetful. In Tamar Lewin’s article “If Your Kids Are Awake, They’re Probably Online” regarding the use of technology in children, she writes about how much children rely on their devices daily. These articles pushed me to believe that parents should limit their children’s time spent using technology on a daily basis. Tamar Lewin provides statistics that show how the overuse of technology yields a heap of detrimental effects on kids. The advancements in mobile technology have planted a seed in some peoples mind that force them to believe that they would be bored without their electronics because they are so quick and easy to use. Kids are becoming so enveloped in the use of their electronics that it begins to take a toll on their learning capabilities, development, and grades.

In Tamar Lewin’s article, she mentions studies conducted by The Kaiser Family Foundation that conjured up facts about the use of electronic devices in young American’s lives. It showed that young Americans spend almost every second of their days on their electronic devices. Their results revealed frightening evidence; “Those ages 8 to 18 spend more than seven and a half hours a day with such devices, compared with less than six and a half hours five years ago, when the study was last conducted. And that does not count the hour and a half that youths spend texting, or the half-hour they talk on their cellphones.”(Lewin) Also, in Lewin’s writing, she presented the words of a young boy named Francisco Sepulveda, who said he felt his days would be boring without using his cell phone. Sepulveda is a prime example of a victim of technology addiction. Since these devices offer such easy access to things such as conversation with friends and family, information about the news and sports, and easy-to-play games, people treat their phones like an organ that they need in order to survive. Sepulveda is a young kid, so he probably spends more time enveloped in his electronic devices than he does focusing on his schoolwork. I believe that Sepulveda’s time spent on his cell phone should be limited so he can spend his time participating in activities that better him as a person.

Adding to the previous argument, the overuse of technology also has an effect on children’s academic performance, Lewin states in her writing that 47 percent of the heaviest technology users had mostly C’s or lower, while the 23 percent who consumed 3 or less hours a day of media use had much better grades. These kids also said they were bored while at school. This is all a result of children obsessing over technology. These statistics show that children place their technology above education on their daily to-do lists and the only way that these statistics can be changed are if parents step in and begin to deter the attention children put into their electronic devices. Unfortunately, if this doesn’t happen, these statistics will continue to worsen because technology is becoming more relevant every day.

Some people would say that technology could help to educate people also. This is true in some cases, such as a teacher using a projector being used during a presentation, or someone using technology as a resource when doing something pertaining to schoolwork. One example of this is presented in Lewin’s writing. A woman by the name of Kim Calinan allowed her young son to watch baby Einstein shows on television, and eventually, Dora the Explorer. By the time he was 4 he was able to click through the channels himself and he had learned to do math early. This makes the use of technology seem to be beneficial. Eventually, though, the...
